251124 - Battle of the Ages
Firstly, thank you to Ben Garard and Battle of Benton for having me at the event. Battle of the Ages is a very well run fitness competition and draws some seriously fit competitors from all over the state. If you’re looking to do a fitness competition in the future, follow Ben Garard, Benton Gym and Battle of Benton for updates on up-coming events.
Secondly, if you are after official photos from the event, these are supplied by Jennifer of JG Creative Life: @jgcreativefitnessphotos It’s a lot of work and Jen did an amazing job on the day.
I attended the event as a freelance photographer; I was not paid by the event. This gives me the freedom to shoot what I like, without the added pressure of shooting the maximum amount of competitors across the day. If you didn’t make the final edit, apologies in advance. When shooting in this capacity, I shoot for quality rather than quantity.
This also allows me to inject my own creative style into my photos. I enjoy having more time to compose shots and edit photos in a way that is closer to my personal style. I have a couple of go-to presets which I use to edit on my phone during the event, but the real work is done in Lightroom after the event.
Most of the shots in the gallery are shot on my Sony A7RV and 85mm GM2. A few months back I started taking one prime lens (no zoom) to gym shoots because a) it’s less equipment to lug around, b) you can’t fall back on the flexibility of a zoom lens, which c) forces you to move your body to zoom in and out and compose your shot. If the shot doesn’t work, you have to move backwards, sideways, or somewhere else to make it work. It’s a challenge that I have begun to love, as what you see through the viewfinder is what you get. If you don’t like what you see, move somewhere else.
I did have a second camera around my neck: my Leica Q3 43. I only picked it up on Saturday and it was the first time I used it. It was more of a test shoot for this camera and for me to review the colour science behind why Leica cameras are revered as the go to camera brand. The result? The colours are amazing but I need more practice understanding the operator system (I spent an hour in bed testing different functions last night!).
Get on with it!
